Open any wellness forum or smart ring app and you will see the same question repeated thousands of times: "My HRV score was 42 ms last night. Is that good or bad?"

It is one of the most common points of confusion in modern health tracking. People buy a wearable or use a smartphone camera scanner, get a single number on a screen, and immediately compare it to a friend, a partner, or a generic internet chart. When their score drops by five points, anxiety kicks in, which ironically drives the number down even further.

The truth is simple: searching for a single universal "good" HRV score in milliseconds is like searching for a universal shoe size. It does not exist. Understanding Heart Rate Variability requires looking past single spot-check readings and focusing on how your autonomic nervous system behaves over time.

What Heart Rate Variability actually measures

If your heart rate is 60 beats per minute, your heart does not beat once every exact second like a metronome. Instead, the time gap between consecutive heartbeats varies constantly. One gap might be 0.94 seconds, the next 1.08 seconds, and the next 0.98 seconds.

A healthy 55-year-old with a resting HRV of 35 ms might be in the 90th percentile of autonomic health for their age group, while a 20-year-old athlete hitting 35 ms might be suffering from acute overtraining.

Furthermore, single 60-second spot checks are full of daily noise. A sudden thought, a change in posture, swallowing, or drinking cold water immediately before a scan can swing a single reading by 20 percent. Single scans show you a momentary snapshot, not your underlying autonomic trend.

From experience
